Degree Project

Through the Haze
Through the Haze delves into a deeply personal exploration of my unique visual experience associated with growing up with a visual impairment. Embracing the perpetual blurriness that has been a constant companion, this book utilizes a rich array of graphic elements, including color theory, typography, and gestalt principles, to craft a visually compelling book that serves as a comprehensive narrative of my journey.

Research

The inception of my degree project was sparked by a keen interest in visual perception, prompting an exploration into the intricate ways in which various aspects of vision impairment can influence graphic elements.

In the initial phase of my research, I conducted experiments involving varying degrees of blurriness applied to typography, color, shapes, and textures. The objective was to discern and analyze the impact of each level of blurriness on the readability and overall legibility of these graphic elements. Through systematic exploration, I sought to understand the nuanced interplay between visual clarity and the distinctive characteristics of typography, color palettes, shapes, and textures.

Initial Research Data

Next Steps

In response to feedback from both professors and classmates, I received encouragement to personalize my research and tailor my data to resonate with audience members who have a personal connection to visual impairment. This insightful guidance emphasized the importance of fostering a more meaningful and relatable connection with the target audience, highlighting the human dimension of the research and enhancing its potential impact on individuals with visual impairments.

Book Design

By strategically weaving together design elements, this initiative strives to illuminate the challenges, celebrate the triumphs, and capture the nuanced experiences of individuals grappling with visual impairment. In doing so, Through the Haze endeavors to foster heightened awareness and empathy, inviting audiences to engage with a more profound and nuanced perspective on the lived experiences of those with impaired vision.

Animated Visuals

In tandem with the printed book, the project incorporates an animated component that serves as a dynamic and symbolic extension of my narrative. This animation serves as a visual journey, providing viewers with an immersive exploration into the intricate world of blurriness that defines my visual experiences growing up. The animation transcends traditional storytelling boundaries through the skillful integration of videos, typography elements, and sound. Videos bring dynamic life to static images, capturing the essence of fleeting moments and creating a poignant visual representation of the ever-shifting landscape of blurriness.
