Identity Crisis

This personal exploration tackles my unique background, with an external appearance resembling a Korean but facing language and cultural barriers that didn’t align entirely. As I embarked on life in the United States, the identity confusion intensified. In the constant sense of not belonging anywhere, I sensed that people with various cultural backgrounds evaluated or distinguished me based on their own background knowledge. Recognizing myself as a being with diverse facets in their eyes, the ongoing questions about my identity, stemming from the differences between perception and recognition, became endless.

Exploration and Sketches

Recognizing myself as a being with diverse facets in their eyes, the ongoing questions about my identity, stemming from the differences between perception and recognition, became endless. I started by exploring the many aspects that define me and my cultural differences through mixed media.

I have interpreted and compartmentalized my information from various perspectives, attempting to archive it. This not only serves the purpose of archiving myself but also leads me to consider whether I can integrate and objectify my identity by recognizing and reinterpreting various aspects of myself.

Type Identity

Building on my previous “My Identity Project,” where I archived various aspects of myself, I now aim to explore the typographic diversification of the “me” context. I envision crafting a graphic book illustrating how these diverse elements come together to form the essence of “me.” By delving into this abstract concept tangibly and seeking visual expressions, I intend to reassess the unique aspects of identity inherent in being a person. This endeavor allows me to create a design that pursues conceptual depth while embracing aesthetic beauty. The project serves as a visual exploration of the intricacies of personal identity, using typography as a tool to reflect and reimagine the composition of the self.
